Snowshoeing is a great way to explore the Portes du Soleil and the amazing landscape and scenery it has to offer. It’s ideal for those who don’t ski or those looking to take a break from the slopes. It’s possible for you to hire snowshoes from any of the ski hire shops in Morzine and Les Gets and go exploring on your own or if you’d like to go a little further a field then there are lots of guides who offer snowshoeing trips to the more remote areas of this part of the world.
In Morzine itself you can head off up the river towards the Nyon car park and walk along the trail for a good 10km. This walk takes you all the way towards the base of the Col de Cou and boasts incredible views of the Morzine valley and the surrounding mountains. If you are alone and don’t want to go too far off the beaten track then the river trail down towards Montriond is also great for snowshoeing. You can also follow the forest trail from Montriond to the lake which is great if you’re looking for something that isn’t too taxing. In Les Gets there’s some great snowshoeing trails and you’ll often see groups of people taking guided walks high up on the edge of some of the mountains. Mont Caly and Mont Chery boast fantastic views of the Mont Blanc range and are really quiet. Your guide usually comes equipped with a bottle of wine to make reaching the peak even more rewarding. These trails are easily accessible if you fancy going it alone as well.
A few companies offer snowshoeing walks coupled with dinner in mountain refuges or specially built igloos. Imagine walking through the fresh snow to have a delicious savoyard feast under the stars. Snowshoeing to the popular Crapuhute restaurant on the Vallee de la Manche is a popular evening activity. The walk, followed by food and sledging make it a firm favourite with guests who go back time and time again. Evolution 2 in Les Gets are a good starting point if you’re looking for someone to show you some amazing routes and trails.
