There’s always loads of amazing events happening across the Portes du Soleil and the winter is the busiest time of all! Over the years we’ve been lucky enough to experience some fantastic musical treats including free on piste concerts and gigs from artists like Rag’n’bone man and Caravan Palace, we’ve seen some incredible sporting events including downhill speed ice skating, boarding and skiing competitions, freestyle events and lots more. It’s always worth checking the ‘what’s ons’ before heading to Morzine and Les Gets but here’s a look at the highlights of the winter!
HIGHLIGHTS
15th December – Spartan Winter Trail Morzine
15th – 22nd March – Snowboxx
16th – 22nd March – Rock The Pistes
MUSIC
Rock the Pistes is a free music festival that comes to the Portes du Soleil each year. Concerts by world famous artists pop up across the Pistes of the region for a week and it’s growing in popularity year on year. In years gone by we have enjoyed Rag’n’bone man on the pistes of Avoriaz and the Pleney played host to Caravan Palace. The festival returns every year in early March and is well worth factoring in when you’re planning your trip to see us this year.
Snowboxx is a festival that coincides with Rock the Pistes each year. It throws a number of ticketed gigs and concerts and we enjoyed some incredible performances from DJs and bands including Basement Jaxx. The whole of Avoriaz comes alive at night for the festival which is growing in popularity by the year.
SPORT
Morzine and Les Gets are perfect holiday destinations if you like getting involved in sport. In the winter you can ski, snowboard, walk, run, swim, ice skate and much much more. If you like to watch a bit of sport too then there are also plenty of exciting events taking place including raucous ice hockey matches and husky races to more subdued ice skating galas- there’s something for everyone to enjoy!
Each week throughout the winter you can catch competitive ice hockey at the Palais des Sports in Morzine. The Morzine Chamonix Pioneers are often in league action and if they don’t have a match, it’s likely that they’ll play a friendly or have a public training session to show you their skills. It’s well worth adding into your holiday schedule if you have time whilst you’re here – it’s lively, fun and something the whole family can enjoy.
Each year, Les Gets plays host to La Grande Odyssée Husky Dog Race. Dogs and their owners come from all over the world to race in this prestigious event. Over 300 dogs race for 5 days as they attempt to pass through 14 resorts including Les Gets. It’s a not to be missed occasion when they do!
If you like watching high adrenaline sports then you wont want to miss the Red Bull Crashed Ice Riders Cup which comes to Avoriaz. This is a high speed ice skating race that takes in jumps, obstacles and other crazy elements. The racers travel at break neck speeds across ice- it will take your breath away!
Other events
As well as sports and music, there are loads of activities that the whole family can get involved in. There are always child friendly events taking place in the tourist office square and on the mountain. The “what’s ons” vary from week to week so make sure you look them up before you come to town.
The Les Gets colour run takes place in March and sees families ski down the face of Mont Chery in white boiler suits whilst being pelted with paint. It’s a fun, family friendly event with music and a lively festival like atmosphere.
Each week the spectacular “torchlit descent” takes place down the face of the Pleney. Instructors from the ESF ski school and local children ski down the mountain carrying flames. The snake of skiers can be seen from all around Morzine and is often accompanied by an amazing firework display.
The tourist office square plays host to all sorts of different events throughout the winter including the “Morzine loves children” festival. The square is filled with toys, games and face painting and is a great way to spend the day if you’re looking for something different to do. You’ll also find different sports, games and music events taking place in the square each week.
