Morzine Christmas Village

Visit Morzine this Christmas

There’s something rather special about spending Christmas in the mountains. Morzine is a lovely place to visit throughout the winter, but during the Christmas holidays the combination of festive lights, snowy mountains, skiing and cosy Alpine traditions gives the village a completely different atmosphere.

More often than not, there’s snow at village level by Christmas, and whatever the conditions in the village, the surrounding snow-covered mountains provide a wonderfully wintry backdrop. Add in the Christmas lights and decorations, and Morzine really does feel like a special place to spend Christmas.

Incase you need a bit more convincing we've made a list of 10 reasons why we love Morzine at this time of year...

1 . Morzine Enchanted Village

Each year Morzine tourist office pulls out all the stops to turn the town centre into a Festive Winter Wonderland. There are Christmas lights throughout the village and a huge Christmas tree outside the Tourist Office. Add to this the carousel, outdoor ice rink, crêpes stand and an abundance of vin chaud - the centre of Morzine is buzzine with that festive feeling.

Each year there is a special programme of events for over the festive period that make for a truly magical week for all the family to enjoy.

This years programme (Dec 2026) is still to be announced but usual key events of the Christmas week include;

  • 23rd December: A concert of Christmas music, last year this was Miss Faustine who sang Christmas songs between 16:30 to 18:30
  • 24 December: from 16:00 you can meet Santa! A fairy tale parade welcomes him featuring a host of magical characters including goblins, swans and creative creatures on stilts! This is usually followed by a torchlit descent down Pleney and a fireworks display
  • 25 December: Head to the town centre by the Office de Tourisme for more evening Christmas music

There are also creative workshops and family shows throughout the week, stay tuned for more once the full programme is released!

2 . Christmas Day on the Slopes

Of course, for most of us, one of the biggest attractions of Christmas in Morzine is waking up knowing that a day on the mountain lies ahead. You can still have all the traditions of Christmas Day — just with a few hours on the slopes first.

Morzine sits at the heart of the huge Portes du Soleil ski area, so there is an enormous amount of skiing and snowboarding to explore. You can spend the day on the local Morzine and Les Gets slopes or head across towards Avoriaz and further into the Portes du Soleil.

There is something particularly enjoyable about being out skiing as a family during the holidays, skiing on Christmas day is extra fun as lots of people go up in fancy dress. You will see skiing Santa's, Rudolph's and families in matching jumpers enjoying Christmas day on the slopes together, stopping for lunch on the mountain before skiing back down into a village lit up for Christmas.

The atmosphere is incredible there is happiness in the air and you do feel like you are in a real winter wonderland, you are surrounded by the white snow of the slopes, set against the unbeatable backdrop of the snowy french alps.

3 . 1 Christmas, 2 Countries

Morzine is uniquely placed to give access to one of the largest joined ski areas - the Portes du Soleil. What makes Morzine unique is being able to ski between France and Switzerland - have your Christmas lunch in Switzerland (home to the Fondue) and Chistmas dinner in France!

 4 . Walking in a Winter Wonderland...

Christmas in Morzine doesn't have to revolve entirely around downhill skiing.

Snowshoeing is a lovely way to explore the quieter side of the mountains with plenty of easily accesssible routes to choose from, including a tour around the picturesque Lac Montriond.

For children, sometimes the simplest activities are the most memorable. An afternoon sledging can be every bit as much fun as a day on skis, and a trip up the Vallée de la Manche to discover the igloo makes a great change of scene.

5 . Cold days and Warm Restaurants

Part of the pleasure of Christmas in the Alps is simply that it feels like winter.

After a day outside in properly cold mountain air, there’s nothing better than heading into a warm restaurant with rosy cheeks for a fondue, raclette or hearty Savoyard dish. Equally, stopping on a sunny terrace for a vin chaud or hot chocolate – preferably still in your ski boots – is all part of a winter holiday in Morzine.

There are plenty of mountain restaurants to make part of the day too. Even non-skiers can get up onto the mountain, making it possible for the whole family to meet for lunch.

From the Pleney side, Le Vaffieu is a favourite spot for a long mountain lunch, while on the Super Morzine side you can head up towards La Grenouille and enjoy the views over Morzine.

6 . Evenings in Morzine

Once the lifts close, there's still plenty going on.

You can skate beneath the Christmas lights at Morzine's outdoor ice rink, ride through town on a horse drawn carriage ride, or, for something a little livelier, go and watch the local ice hockey team in action. A Morzine-Avoriaz Penguins match is great fun even if you've never watched ice hockey before – and children generally love the atmosphere.

Or you can simply head into town for dinner, wander through the illuminated streets and stop for a drink before heading back to the warmth of your chalet.

7 . Christmas in your own Reach4theAlps Chalet

Rather than spending Christmas in a hotel room, everyone can stay together with a proper living space, Christmas tree and room to relax — your own home in the mountains for Christmas week. Whether you opt for a Self Catered Chalet or one of our Catered Chalets the food in Morzine definitely makes the list for why Christmas here is special.

Catered Chalet Holiday

When staying in one of our Catered Chalets our Chalet Hosts are on hand to make your Christmas week one to remember. On Christmas day start the day with a full english breakfast before heading out to enjoy Christmas day in Morzine. A festive treat will be ready waiting for when you return after a day of skiing. Self-Catered Holiday

Our self-catered chalets all have very well equipt kitchens for if you want to tackle the Christmas dinner yourselves. We partner with a wine supplier called Chefs Cellar who have an amazing selection of wines for the perfect accompaniment to your dinner. For desert, you can also get in touch with local bakeries La Bonbonnière and Les Epis du Roc to order a traditional French Bouche - yum!

Lots of the local restaurants will run a special Christmas set menu, such as La Grange, Le Clin D'Oeil, and Hotel du Lac- book in advance for this as places fill up! Or celebrate Christmas Savoyarde style- Fondues and Raclette are traditional Savoyarde dishes served in most the restaurants in Morzine that are perfect for sharing amongst a large group.

8 . Apres Ski Atmosphere

Finish your day on the slopes with a drink and some live music at the famous La Folie Douce before heading home to your chalet or to carry on the party at Le Tremplin and Cavern in Morzine. Morzine has plenty of après without having to be a full-on party resort, so different generations can enjoy it.

For the equivalent of Christmas Eve at your local pub, we recommend heading to Le Tremplin. There is an amazing atmosphere here over Christmas and a surprise waiting for you down the slide to the toilets ... if you know you know!

9 . Adrenaline filled Christmas

Morzine is home to some amazing activities to enjoy over Winter. For a truly unforgettable holiday this year why not try something completely different?

Choose from; Paragliding, mountain snow-karting, snow mobile rides, husky rides, cross country skiing and night sledging for experiences the family is sure to be talking about years from now!

10 . A different kind of Christmas

Christmas in Morzine still feels like Christmas, just with mountains outside the window. That's what makes Christmas in Morzine so enjoyable. Christmas at home can involve a lot of sitting around, cooking and television, in Morzine, everyone is doing things together.

It's waking up to mountain views, wrapping up warm to walk into the village, spending the day skiing or walking with the family, stopping for hot chocolate when everyone gets cold, sledging with the children, lingering over a mountain lunch and coming home tired and rosy-cheeked at the end of the day. Add to this the Christmas tree, lights, ice rink, church, carousel and – with a little luck – plenty of snow. For us it really is the perfectly gift wrapped way to spend Christmas.
