Will there be enough snow?
Although Morzine village sits at around 1,000m, the majority of the skiing takes place much higher. Within minutes you can access the snow-sure slopes of Avoriaz at 1,800m, giving you access to one of the largest ski areas in the world – the Portes du Soleil.
Avoriaz has a good reputation for late-season skiing thanks to its location close to Lake Geneva, where moist Atlantic weather systems are lifted over the Chablais mountains, producing regular snowfall throughout the winter. Combined with predominantly north-facing slopes that preserve the snow exceptionally well, the conditions remain remarkably reliable right through March and into April.
The statistics back this up
On average, Avoriaz receives:
476cm of snowfall every winter
Around 90cm of fresh snow during March
A further 41cm during April
An average snow base of around 1.7 metres in March
An average snow base of around 1.3 metres in April
Perhaps even more importantly, the mountain has usually built up its deepest snow base by March, so any fresh snowfall simply adds to already excellent conditions.
Having lived and worked in Morzine for over 20 years, we've enjoyed some fantastic skiing in March & April, and it certainly isn't unusual to wake up to fresh snowfall in April.
Better value for your ski holiday
Late season skiing also offers some of the best value of the winter.
From the week beginning 14th March onwards our accommodation prices are lower than earlier weeks in the season, making it a fantastic time to enjoy everything Morzine has to offer for less.
From 20th March onwards, there are even more savings to enjoy, with discounted Morzine-Les Gets and Portes du Soleil lift passes available. Families can also take advantage of a fantastic offer on both Morzine-Les Gets and Portes Du Soleil passes, with children aged 11 and under skiing free with the purchase of an adult lift pass.
Means more relaxed skiing
By mid-March the pistes are quieter meaning, shorter lift queues and a much more relaxed atmosphere on the mountain. Whether you're an experienced skier looking to cover plenty of kilometres or a family wanting a stress-free holiday, late season skiing offers a completely different experience from the peak weeks.
March and Easter really do offer the best of both worlds. The mountains have their deepest snow base of the season, the days are longer, the atmosphere is more relaxed, and you can often ski in the morning before enjoying lunch outside in the sunshine.
It's one of our favourite times of year in Morzine, and it's no coincidence that many of our guests return year after year for a good value late-season ski holiday.
Longer days, more time on the mountain
One of the biggest advantages of skiing in March and over Easter is the extra daylight. Longer days mean more time on the slopes and more time to enjoy everything else the mountains have to offer.
There's nothing quite like sitting on a sunny restaurant terrace for lunch before heading back out for an afternoon's skiing, then finishing the day with a drink in the sunshine.
