Ski Touring
Go off the beaten track
Ski touring, also known as ski mountaineering or alpine touring, uses specialised equipment that allows you to climb and descend slopes without the aid of ski lifts. Combining endurance, technique, and adventure, this rewarding sport grants access to untouched powder snow and spectacular mountain scenery, offering a true sense of freedom.
This alpine sport is becoming increasingly popular as it provides an opportunity to escape the crowds and experience the mountains from a different perspective. Once you've learned how to use the specialist equipment and techniques, you can explore more remote areas of the mountain, discover hidden terrain, and enjoy the freedom and adventure of backcountry skiing.
This is an activity best suited to experienced skiers with good fitness levels who are comfortable skiing in powder.Â
How Ski touring works
Touring skis use a binding with a free heel for climbing, paired with skins that attach to the base of the skis. The free heel allows fluid, walking-like movements during ascents or when traversing flat terrain. Typically made from Mohair, Nylon, or a blend of both, the skin grips the snow to prevent the ski from sliding backwards. Climbing with skins is often called skinning.
Slopes of up to 25 degrees can be climbed directly. Steeper slopes, up to 35 degrees, can be climbed in a series of traverses linked by kick-turns or conversions. Beyond 35 degrees, it is often easier to strap skis to a special touring rucksack and climb on foot, perhaps with crampons.
Ski touring takes you into more remote mountain terrain and can be dangerous. Preparation, proper gear, and safety equipment are crucial to enjoying this sport safely.Â
For your safety and enjoyment, it is highly recommended to go with a qualified guide or instructor. These experienced professionals have expert knowledge, including the safest routes with the best snow conditions, and insights into the local nature and stunning mountain surroundings, making your experience even more rewarding.
